My new, freshly-graduated, career coaching client asked the other day: What is success? How will I know that I've achieved it?
The answer is simple. Success is what you define it to be.
If you are working an 8 to 5 job and you constantly dream about running your own business, then being an entrepreneur would be part of your success definition.
If you wake up each morning with gratitude about the little things in your life that make your life feel complete and add meaning to it, that is a definition of success too.
If you feel a chunk of your life is missing, such as a relationship partner or true friend, you won't feel successful until you find the missing links.
For some, being a mother after years of being unable to conceive is success. For a scientist to discover a cure for an untreatable disease is success. For another standing up to an obnoxious boss or co-worker is success.
So, a more important question we really need to ask is: What do I desire?
And the next one: How shall I serve?
Because...your success is determined by what goals you set for yourself and ultimately, to be successful is to help others reach success.
I believe that in life we are not meant to go it alone, but to create through conscious collaboration, which brings with it immense work satisfaction. It gives life great meaning.
When work becomes like child's play, you'll know you've mastered your craft and have achieved success in your career.
Remember, you have all that you need to succeed in life. Sometimes a little nudge and a push in the right direction is all that's needed to set you on a path of exponential personal growth and accelerated success.
There's an African Proverb that says: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Very true.
